Meeting A Legend And A Heroine

The girl who started it all.
40+ years ago, in 1967 to be exact; a female college runner decided to enter the Boston Marathon. Her scuffle with the race official, Jock Semple was plastered in the news afterwards as women was barred from running the Boston Marathon.

If you want to read more of the fateful day, you can do so :
Runners' World "The Girl Who Started It All" which was the first article I read about Kathrine Switzer.

Kathrine Switzer, a hero(ine) and a potent symbol of equality.

Women and the journey of us running long distance does not come easy. Women such as Kathrine Switzer paved the way and made it possible for us female runners to enjoy joining road races now. More on the road paved by these heroine here.

Kathrine Switzer arrived LCCT this evening at 5.55pm. She's here for the inaugural Malaysia Women Marathon and we are so excited to meet her!
She is such a gracious lady and as you can see, we are all star-strucked and awe-strucked by her. Just look at our grins! LOL

Everyone got a hug (hugs actually), photos and lucky Farah got her book autographed. We talked, we laughed and we listened to e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. she said in earnest. But, of course. Right?
.
I was all emo, uncertain and feeling depressed about my marathon training the past weeks (just read this ranting of a post of mine) and nothing like meeting a running legend to make me all raring to go!
Yes! I am now excited for Sunday to arrive! 42.195km, HERE I COME!
Here's the guy who made it possible for me to meet my running idol and he'll be waiting for me either at the last 10 or 6KM of the marathon this Sunday to drag me to the finish line. He's also the reason I have 40+ photos of Kathrine Switzer in my collection. ^^

I'm hoping I'll get to meet her again during REPC at i-City.

p.s. If you are running Malaysia Women Marathon and see a runner with bunny ears running...
yeah, like this -  do say hello. That would be me, unless there are other runners in similar ears running. ;)

    1. In her Boston Marathon article, the word Syracuse caught my eyes as many people thought Manhattan is the capital of New York. It is actually Syracuse!

The next thing that enlightened me is that Boston is a mecca for runners! This is news to me.

    2. Boston Marathon is the world's oldest marathon, Anay.

Plus, to enter Boston, you must run fast enough as it has a qualifying time for you. It has very high standard and every marathoner dreams to BQ (Boston qualify) time. Run under three hours for 42.195km and you can dream of entering Boston Marathon. ^^
