She's Chindian Kot

By Chindian, it means a person of both Chinese and Indian ancestry.

That's what a new girl in the IT department told her colleague. I was looking for someone in the IT department and only the new girl was around. She told her colleague that someone came looking for her. She thinks the lady is a Chindian in the Finance department. Her colleague rightly guessed it was ME! Ahahaha Adoi.

There was one time, I was talking to the office tower guard while waiting for the lift and he remarked about how well I talk in Malay. Mind you, I was wearing a baju kurung that day. My answer : "of course I talk well in Malay. I am Malay" Double adoi.
When nosy people ask about me having only one child, I've heard remark about how "unMalay" of me to have one child. What's that suppose to mean, darling? Malays breed like rabbits? Don't generalise. I have a Chinese friend with 5 kids, you know.

Also, if you say I'm very different from other Malays - what's that supposed to mean? A compliment to me? An insult to me as a Malay? I've also been accused of being "unMalay" by Malays. WTH?

No, this is not a racial post.

It's just that I feel that sometimes we do compartmentalise people into categories and stereotypes. Don't.

  2. true lah, it's actually rude to compartmentalise people into categories and stereotypes, but some may not intend to offend lah, no worth to be angry at those lah, life has too many more important things for us to bother.. :)

    1. I still feel we ALL should do away with "that Chinese" "this Malay" "the Indian" "that Iban" "the Benggali" and such.

We talk about discrimination yet sometimes unknowingly we do that too. It is not uncommon to hear ppl uttering "Malay... Normal la" or "Cina, macam tu la".

      Why?

    2. I might sound very tight up about this but seriously in this day & age, using ignorance as a reason just doesn't cut it.

    2. During the weeks before the GE13 I met a fellow retired man who jaga the pondok with me. He has 4 school going children and he grumbled & complained so much about raising them - time & money gone!!! He concluded that he was stupid and foolish to think having more children is good. Time has changed.

    3. With the cost of living so high, it's hard to have a big family now. Furthermore it's not just about providing food n shelter, it's about having the time to raise them properly too... Instead of relegating the responsibilities to say... nannies, maids or day are centres. :(

    1. Being modern doesn't mean a person is less Malay or Chinese or Indian or Kadazan or Iban. ;-)

Sometimes it irks me that people question my Malayness as they judged at how I dressed. :|
