Let Me Make Mistakes And Learn From It

That's what Son used to tell us... not for allowing him to make big mistakes or do a big gamble in life. Not yet, anyway. But rather, that was what he told us when we wanted to make sure his homework is done correctly or nicely.
Draw for him? Not allowed to.

Correct his work? No! Teachers will correct it. "How am I going to learn?" he retorted.

We need to make sure he completes his daily pile of homework but he can be heard muttering "don't you trust me?" Ouch... But he's not given a free rein because his teachers told us that he has a tendency to do thing halfway and not finish it, homeworks too. Hmmmm... So much for being trusted.

Pretty darn stubborn that boy. Wonder who he takes after, that stubborn attitude. HAHAHA

And to wait for him to finish his homework? OMG! It takes ages!

For his studies, he listens to us during revisions and if/when he doesn't understand something. Other than that, he get sulky when we insisted on checking on his work or tried to "correct" his answers.

So yeah, his books has a lot of markings from the teachers and subsequently a lot of corrections done. Plenty of ugly drawings too. Let's not talk about his ugly handwriting!

But he seems OK with it.

Anyway, this boy despite being stubborn, a tad lazy, a tad mischiveous, loves any excuse not to attend school; is the top 2 boy in his class. I kinda given up hope of ever seeing him getting the top place.

But I respect him wanting to be independent. I respect that he never insist on us helping him do his homework. If he doesn't finish anything, it's his responsibility to bear the consequences.

But sometimes, I wonder whether we're being lacksaidical about his education? Are we being lazy parents? I don't know.   I feel I am. :(

  1. It's good that he's independent. I like my kids to be independent as that will help them to be responsible for themselves too.

    1. Yup. I agree.

Plus easier for me to get busy with other nonsense I do to. *wink wink*

  2. Although I don't have children, I think it is a good thing that your son is independent and willing to bear consequences if he makes mistakes or didn't finish his work. Not many kids are like that these days, sad to say. Most still hide behind their mom's skirts even though they're already in their tweens. Maybe your son just need to improve the "lazy" part. Haha.. Procrastination is not a good thing. :P

    1. Kids can't be independent if we parents don't want them to be. Betul tak? ;-)

  3. I have no idea what it's like to be a parent, but speaking as a teacher ... you have to ensure that students are correct and creative, obey the rules yet act independently. It's a tricky balance, especially for an anarchist from Africa. :D

PS: I'm much stricter with good students. Get going, kid, run that extra mile. Gwan! Shoo!

    1. It's tricky in Malaysia too. Much more to a fellow anarchists. ;-)

My son's teachers are strict with him but as he had been brainwashed since young by the parents to think that "getting scolded" means we care a lot about him, he takes them in his stride. His favourite teacher happens to be a strict maths teacher. *horror* lol

  4. Good la he wants to makes own mistakes.

I am not sure about j kiddue. Seems to push back the work to parents. Like if messy homework, they ask parents to monitor.

    1. Raimie can take as long as he wants. Easy. If he's doing it before dinner, no dinner till finish homework. If it's before bedtime, must finish before sleep. His work, his responsibility to manage time.

  6. Good to let him learn from it!!! Everyone has to learn from mistake, then they only can remember it forever!!! =]

  7. HeLLo Wenn,

I'm a teacher and I'm hoping that parents will be involved in educating their children That will be the best for both of us.

    1. Willie,
Wenn is an ex-teacher so I suppose she shares your sentiment too.

For me, I monitor his studies. He does his revision with us, at home because we didn't send him to tuition classes.

We crack our heads together studying. Both me & hubby are very actively involved in his school activities too.

BUT, his homework is his homework. I can kutuk him to do it nicely or tell him to change his answers but he doesn't want us doing that.

Should have done more but there you go...

    2. That's good enough. Thumbs up.

  8. Probably he is very confident with himself? By the way, you must be proud too. Raimie do all his homework by himself.

  9. My son, I have to remind him everytime. Duh! But he will do homework for those subjects he likes.

  10. Looks like he trust his teacher more than you guys. Anyway no worries Lina, when we send them to school, we must trust the teachers also. I'm sure everything will be fine.

  11. U r not a lazy mother, Sis... U r just being concerned with him to do his homework correctly... I used to home tutor some primary students too before, some need to be spoon fed while others tend to do all by themselves...

Learn from the mistakes is ok so that there will be no redundancy... He's on the right track so far, just keep on monitoring him. After all, he's so brilliant n a tad stubborn... U should be so proud of him, no. 2 in the class... =)

  12. hmmmm, no more everything good about Raimie but today we see the Mommy counting all his vices one by one!! hahaha, well, no one is perfect but i think this boy isn't too bad, still Top 2 in class and he did not commit anything ugly also right??

  13. well, i think if he insisted to be independent and wanted to learn from his mistakes, i would be happy to let him do that.. of course you are not a lazy Mommy but i think you have a different way to educate and bring up your son, which has proven a good result right??

p/s: of course when i say you are not lazy is only in this area lah.. others like house chores and merajuk at anak then those are different cases wokay?? :p

  14. but one thing you are right and i couldn't agree more.. if he doesn't finish anything, it's his responsibility to bear the consequences.. i always believe as a student, their responsibilities are studies and exams and homework, just like we working adults need to rush for reports and proposals likewise.. i do not agree parents to help them with the homework at all..

    ReplyDelete
  15. i remember i always did my homework on my own, not only did but to be exact COMPLETED on time.. i was more kiasu because i will put homework at the forefront, must finished everything first before i have the mood to play.. i won't feel relaxed if i had homework undone because i'll keep thinking of them~~ :D

    1. Ah Boy is such an exemplary student.

Lazy Mommy cannot emulate him let alone make her son do the same.

But must finish homework before can even think of playing computer games. That's house rule. :P

  16. LOL - my mom had strict rules. No TV until finish homework. No electronic games except during school holidays:|

  17. I left my boy alone. When he didn't do his homework, his teachers would punish him. He learnt his lessons the hard way for being stubborn :P

It's not that we're not involved or concerned with our child's studies, but their work is THEIR work. Right?

  20. Oh yes, i was saying that if Ketchumi reads this post, she would pat your son's head with both thumbs UP!!

She has been complaining to her students and their parents for spoon feeding them too much. Some parents do not even allow their kids to make mistakes besides some students expect the easy way out too. The ship in the ocean needs to sail and brave the rocks and storms to stay afloat.

    1. Having a mistake free workbooks doesn't reflect how good a student is.

I have no problem at seeing red marks in my son's books.

That means he has to study and revise harder. :P
