A Simple Palate

One of Son's favourite thing to eat.

Soba.
Zaru soba.

Which is chilled soba served on a bamboo tray called zaru, topped with shredded seaweed and dipped into  tsuyu, a dipping sauce much like a diluted soy sauce. ^^

Leave out the tempura and Son is totally fine with it. It is much better for him to have it simple.

When Son was waaaayyy younger and Daddy used to work even on weekends and Mommy just need to cook for Son, she usually served soba for Son.

Zaru soba. Served simply as is.

Sometimes Mommy would whip out tempura to be served on the side. Sometimes, soba served in a miso broth.

He always wants soba when we eat out even now. Maybe because it's his comfort food?

    1. Ramen is more to Chinese style than soba is, right?

I read somewhere that up to the 1950s, ramen is also called Shina soba (Chinese soba).

      Well, whatever suits us.

I myself adore soba and to a lesser degree udon. Ramen... not so much. ^^

  4. hmmm, do i actually like soba?? okay lah, not bad lah.. but i think i like ramen the most, maybe soba next, and probably udon the least?? dunno lah, udon here taste so not nice, the only one i think is nice was the one i had in Japan~~ :D

    1. Yalah, udon here (almost all) not as nice and chewy and springy like the real deal over in Japan.

Actually same thing to soba also.

Ramen? Oh heck! I dunno what ramen taste like in Japan so cannot compare. But I think most Chinese would prefer ramen?

p.s. this is not a racial profiling yeah. Just wondering due to the fact that it does suit the palate of most visitors from other Asian countries.

    2. quite true also, almost anything that came here, the quality drops!! huh?? you never eaten ramen in Japan before, heck, you've been there so many times..

eih, i think ramen could be originated from china, maybe that explains your curiosity??

    3. Ramen mostly has pork bone broth mah. So better just to avoid than have the hassle of investigating the ingredients with the wait staff (though I have to admit, I do that a LOT).

Tak mati pun tak eat ramen in Japan. LOL

p.s. Ramen origins : read my reply to Hayley. Hahaha

    3. Dangerous for me too.

I like to pretend that eating mihun is way better than the yellow noodles though. :P

    4. no need to pretend lah.. i always think mihun is way healthier than the yellow noodles lah.. at least mihun is not made with lots of oil and colorings right?? worst should be koay teow i guess, the more oily the better quality, muahahahaha!! :D

    5. But then again, does mihun has any nutritional value at all? Or just empty carbs?

Fried koay teow is the BEST!!!!!

Oh gawd! Why do we like sinful food, ah?

    6. Wakakakaka LOL!!! Crap talking! I agree that Char Koay Teow is the best though most sinful.

Happy mommy? I should say happy daddy too. No need to eat what mommy cooks. :P

p.s. in this household, cooking is not exclusive to mommy duties. Daddy cooks too. ^^

  11. I tasted Rashid's udon for lunch. Didn't actually like its chewy texture. I've never tried Ramen or Soba yet. Thinking of trying these two noodles soon.

Dalam banyak2 Asian noodles, my all time favourite would always be mee goreng mamak with a runny egg... Owhh sinfully drooled! Drip2... ;D...

    1. we don't have to like what others like anyway, right?

I'm ok with ramen but truthfully, completely ambivalent about it. I like the simplicity (but somehow feel sophisticated) of traditionally served udon & soba. but that's just me!
