Two Sides
Always stand on the left side when taking an escalator in Japan so that those who are in a rush can walk on the other side. Time is of the essence! So is good manners and basic courtesy.
However, do stand on the right side when you are in Osaka!
Here? We stand any which way we like. I am rather partial in standing in the middle myself. But that's only when Zaini and Raimie are in front of me. xD
You?
p.s have you seen SK's awesomely packed escalator photo in his previous post? I wish I had photos like that!
yeah, sometimes it's quite confusing really.. some places they stand on the left and some places they stand on the right!! oh, i think gotta stand aside to observe this before we take the escalator..
ReplyDeleteFollow what others do! Monkey see, monkey do. ;p
Deletebut malaysians, haiyah, they stand wherever they like lah.. can be left or right or even in the center!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so malaysian!
DeleteMe too, Yvonne!
DeleteI only behave when I'm overseas. Kakaka
standing one side still ok because i can overtake.. but those standing right in the middle, come on lah, blocking the way aje, i really hate that!!
ReplyDeleteI'll keep that in mind and purposely block you! *evil laugh*
Deletesometimes when they are standing right in the middle, i will purposely langgar them, hahahaha!! but sad thing is they still do not take action and continue to STONE at that position, OMG what kind of thinking??
ReplyDeletewei, SK, you purposely langgar them, later they sue you sexual harassment, how? Kakakaka.....
Deletelanggar only never mind lah. Make sure SK's hands don't accidentally touch anywhere. kekeke
Deleteso those were taken in tokyo and osaka?? hmmm, you want to show that packed escalator to complete your "tales of the two cities".. i can borrow you that photo lah, no problem, you take aje lah~~ :)
ReplyDeleteOne taken at Ueno Station in Tokyo.
DeleteThe other taken at Gardens Mall, KL. xD
I don't have anything from Osaka.
I tried to take, but was too much in a hurry that time. ;p
I'm partial to standing in the right when coming up or going down. However, I'm glad that I came across this. It gave me a new lesson to learn, so when I do go to Japan I can remember this. :)
ReplyDeleteI would always go to the left if I'm alone.
DeleteBut with company, and on a packed escalator I'm guilty of standing right smack in the middle! ^^!
Because sometimes, people are so rushed a complete stranger will stand next to me. Or too close behind me. I don't like that.
Japanese are more discipline, aware and prihatin. Sad to comment, most ppl here are selfish :(
ReplyDeleteMy hometown here is still very much depends on staircase. Only one shopping mall has escalator with not much patron - still ok la
ReplyDeleteUse staircase healthier! :)
DeleteWe don't have escalators in Africa.
ReplyDeleteAh, I'm just joking, of course we do. We stand any which way, except when we fall flat because there's an armed robbery in progress in the vicinity. Now I'm not joking.
To me the funniest escalator behaviour in Tokyo is people who RUN past you on the train platform, only to come to a dead halt in the queue waiting to go up the escalator. Meanwhile yours truly continues strolling along, on her own feet, up the stairs, and arrives on the next floor long before the runner. Wakaka!
Armed robbery? Pffttt.
DeleteThere was once, a car decided to plummet from a particularly flimsy carpark barrier and use the escalator at a mall here; killing innocent escalator users. @.@
They do that in Tokyo. I always thought and see people running down the stairs. OK... going up may be a challenge especially if the train platform in located right in the centre of the earth crater. kakaka
I see that you are using "our" laughter sound today. :)
A car used an escalator as an exit ramp?! o_0 OK, that's it, you're worse than us!
DeleteTokyo = not only running up/down stairs, but women running in high heels and micro skirts! I don't geddit and never will. Eeeeh?
What's the Malaysian equivalent of the Japanese "eeeeh"?
I do stand on left side when on the escalator. Like driving, "Ikut Kiri Jika Tidak Memotong". hehehe!
ReplyDeleteGood habit!
DeleteBut with Malaysian drivers, we need to ikut kiri to memotong. Every slow poke seems to like to hog the right lane! @.@
I always stand on the left side when I am taking the escalator. Courtesy mah. There are always people standing in the middle obstructing traffic flow. :(
ReplyDeleteI go to the left if I'm alone. But if the escalator already packed, I stand in the middle.
DeleteLike I mentioned in the comment above, I don't like stranger standing next to me or standing so near to me on escalators. You cannot walk already since the escalator full, so don't push push me also lah. I want to ride the escalator comfortably too! ;p
Seriously, sometimes I think we don't understand the virtue of "private space".
EH, why in Osaka you must stand on the right?
ReplyDeleteOsakans don't follow Tokyoites!
DeleteThey are rivals at baseball too!
LOL
Seriously, dunno owh. ;p
I can't even remember which side to stand on when in Hong Kong - I remember they observe this rule.
ReplyDeleteBut you made sure you stand like the rest of them lah, right? :)
DeleteAs for malaysians, the rule is to stand in the middle. Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteI'm guilty of that sometimes! ^^!
DeleteMaybe they should have a notice at the escalator like those "stand behind the yellow line" kind : D
ReplyDeleteEven that sign also some people don't follow. We have to stand behind the yellow line for our safety but some don't care about that!
DeleteI should do what you do and stand in the middle. Nowadays, people just barge through, whether it's left or right! (at least in Malaysia)
ReplyDeletehahaha
Deletethat's true.
Yeah only over here people stand any which way they want. In Singapore pun people will stand on the left side and leave their right side vacant. Tapi I biasa stick to the left side or right side but never in the middle because my habit is I HAVE to hold the escalator hand railing thingy. Sebab I phobia jatuh and u simply have no place to hold if u stand in the middle. hahahahaahah
ReplyDeleteDari middle side pun boleh pegang railing. Lagi memblock jalan. keskeskes
