Nikko - Kinugawa Onsen In December 2017

After spending two nights in Yumoto Onsen, we checked out and made our way to our next destination - to Kinugawa Onsen.
Compared to Yumoto Onsen, Kinugawa Onsen is much more livelier, with many hotels and ryokans dotted along Kinugawa River.
Kinugawa Onsen is nearby to tourists attraction such as Tobu World Square and Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura so one can combine visits to these theme parks with a relaxing stay at one of the inns in Kinugawa Onsen. It snowed the morning we checked out from our hotel in Yumoto Onsen.
It was nice to walk on the road covered with a thin layer of snow to get to the bus stop that would take us to Shimo-Imaichi station.
While we saw snow covering the side of the roads and trees on the higher elevation (our hotel is  located 1,400 mtr above sea level), it was progressively warmer and we didn't see any snow when we got to Lake Chuzenji and when we zig-zagged on the iro-hazaka, the zig-zagging 48 curved slopes that brought us up and down the lower eleva…

Yumoto Onsen In December 2017

We visited Nikko in December 2017 and stayed for two nights at Yumoto Onsen.
It's an onsen resort located in the center area of Nikko National Park and near the Lake Yunoko. Yumoto onsen is an onsen resort on the plateau area surrounded by the wetlands registered under the Ramsar Convention and that's where we spent two nights while we visited Nikko last year.

I guess it was a tad troublesome to travel all the way to Yumoto Onsen unless one wants to mountain climb in summer or ski in winter or enjoy the autumn magnificence, because when we were there the place was pretty quiet. But during peak season, this place definitely would be bustling!
We booked our room at Ohruri in Yumoto Onsen and when we were there, only about 10 rooms were occupied which was pretty fine for us!
The hotel behind ours had a full house though, filled with Japanese school kids on a trip. While the onsen resort is quite small there were some nice attractions available.

The place is rather quiet and befo…

A Hike In Nikko National Park - December 2017

Senjogahara Marshland is located above 1,400 mtr above sea level (our onsen resort, Yumoto Onsen is 1,487 mtr above sea level) and covers the plateau between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen.
In December 2017, we visited Senjogahara Marshland as we hiked from Yumoto Onsen along Lake Chuzenji with our final destination being the Kegon Falls. Kegon Falls is rated as one of Japan's most beautiful waterfalls, alongside Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama Prefecture (which we hiked and visited in September 2015) and Fukuroda Waterfall in Ibaraki Prefecture.
Kegon Falls is 100 mtr tall and is Nikko's most famous waterfall. Apart from Kegon Falls, we also managed to view Yudaki Falls and Ryuzu Falls during our hike.
During winter, the marshland is usually covered by several centimeters of snow typically between December and March, during which the hiking trails may not be passable. We were lucky that on the day of our hike, it wasn't snowing so our hike was quite easy and bearable. It sno…

Nikko In Late Autumn 2017

I never really got around writing about our Nikko trip, did I?
We decided to head to Nikko for our Dec 2017 trip  and unlike our Osaka trip in September the same year, Son tagged along this time. It was after all, his birthday treat trip.

We did Koyasan in September and I hiked alone at Minoh park during that trip but this time around, the family hiked along Lake Yunoko and Lake Chuzenji and enjoyed the view of Senjogahara Marshland and the three big waterfalls - Yudaki, Ryuzu and Kegon. We got ourselves the Nikko All Area Pass for our trip to Nikko from Asakusa.
We bought the Nikko All Area Pass at Tobu Asakusa Station for 4,520yen per adult and the pass was valid for 4 days with the following condition: ONE round trip from Asakusa to Shimo-Imaichi station on local lineUnlimited train and bus rides in the zones allocated during the validity of the pass With the pass, we could choose to ride Limited Express Spacia and Reverty, after paying a surcharge of 1,080 yen on top of the 4,520…
