Banana Leaf And Briyani Meals
and I always lament over the fact that my weight pretty much stays the same regardless the amount of workouts I've done?
Been hankering for some banana leaf rice for a bit now. There's one restaurant at Jalan Telawi that serves it but if we get there a tad late i.e. after 7pm, the place is already packed with patrons; locals and foreigners alike and we were always late.
Finally got the chance to eat banana leaf rice last Friday.
Raimie and his "plate" of rice. He wasn't happy to be eating there though as he prefers to go to a nearby Nasi Kandar Pelita for his "Ayam masak kicap".
Ours. Huge dollop of rice on my "plate" because I didn't say when at the staff to stop scooping rice on my banana leaf. For Zaini, he had another helping of rice later.
Vegetarian version : Three types of vegetables - bitter gourd, long beans and cucumber pickles; salted chillies (I love it!) and rice topped with dhall curry.
The non-vegetarian version : same three vegetables with a side dish of chicken masala plus rice topped with fish curry gravy for Zaini.
Medium serving of squid and papadum completed our meal. Yeah, I didn't go all vegetarian that day. Enjoyed that squid a lot. Raimie did too. ^^
and then, there's this. We didn't eat this chicken briyani on the same day we ate that banana leaf rice. That would be too much cholesterol overload! Had this for lunch on Friday two weeks ago.
The highlight of having an off-day on Friday and being at home for both Zaini and I would be eating briyani at the Mamak nearby our home. The place only serves briyani on Fridays.
After all these rich food, is it any wonder we ate only bread last weekend?
Note : all photos were taken with my dinky RM400 phone. ;p
wow..I need to try it..scrumptious!
ReplyDeleteyou should. :)
DeleteI think I eat this before and it is seriously good :)
ReplyDeleteIt is.
DeleteBut after this meal, must seriously burn it. I went for a 21K run the next morning. LOL
the dried chili is crispy and not so spicy right? hahaha :P
ReplyDeleteYalah, not spicy at all. Added the right amount of crunch to the meal. :)
DeleteLook delicious! The dried chillies - they sure are appetising.
ReplyDeleteThe salted chillis added more zing to the dish. :)
DeleteOooh looking at those photos is making me hungry for banana leaf food and wouldn't you know it - there isn't an Indian restaurant around here! I'll have to wait till the weekend :)
ReplyDeleteTomorrow already Thursday so the weekend is near! ;)
Deleteoh, i think i know where you've been.. is this just opposite bangsar village??
ReplyDeleteBingo! :)
Deletebeen there once for lunch and was lucky we were able to get our seats just immediately..
ReplyDeleteThat place so popular la right? Every time we pass by in the evening, sure got queue one.
Deletevery nice and i enjoyed the bitter gourd very much, haha!! crispy and not bitter at all..
ReplyDeleteThe bitter gourd was nice. Pity I can't take much fried stuff now so jelak a bit eating it. Some more, there's a lot of the stuff on my banana leaf!
Deletewow, that's really a huge dollop of rice huh?? so the waiter just keep on scooping until he stopped and thought, "gadis ni, kenapa tak suruh henti?? baik aku henti sekarang!!" *sweating*
ReplyDeleteNot only rice lah! Vege mound also bigger than Zaini's. The staff looked nervously at me when I just let him add more and more stuff onto my banana leaf. LOL
DeleteAnd yeah, he stopped without prompting. ;p
i think i had less rice than you, wakakaka!! anyway, i had some meat also lah..
ReplyDeleteI carbo-loading mah! wakaka
DeleteAnyways, I ate Zaini's chicken masala apart from the squid too. So banyak makan! Yet, I was complaining earlier on that I wasn't feeling well (tummy cramping) Burp.
fuyoh!! scared me!! i thought you had another serving of that nasi briyani right after that banana leaf rice!! :p
ReplyDeleteEat like that, cannot move at all after the meal! LOL
Deleteshould have only eat vege and fruits and meat without bread on weekends lah.. too much carbo~~ :p
ReplyDeleteWhere got kenyang like that? My tummy is very Asian (Malay) tummy. I need rice. ;p
Deleteeih, still RM400 meh?? depreciated already i think now maybe only RM40!! haha.. time to change to iPhone 4S already~~ :p
ReplyDeleteAiyoh, I pay RM400 I say RM400 lah! Don't depreciate it like that. Make me look so poor. Wakaka
DeleteAh~~ long time no had banana leaf rice, I'm so so craving for it as I'm feeling kinda hungry already.
ReplyDeleteHad a little during my lunch just now @_@ Canteen food not nice, got 4 options only - diluted curry chicken, ayam masak kicap, stir fried taugeh and dunno-what-hanyir-punya-ikan goreng.
I only took nasi with taugeh and diluted kuah.
You don't use the delivery service already?
DeleteThat canteen food sounds worse than my "dewan makan" food I ate during my school years! o.O
Talk about delivery service.... got ppl jealous and raised the issue during the management meeting. Macam sudah kena "banned". If wanna order also macam tikus, tak boleh buat terang-terang *sweat*
DeleteAiyoh! Eat also want to jealous and complain ah?
DeleteIs it the canteen people who got jealous? o.O
I used to follow my Indian colleague for vegetarian banana leaf rice on every Friday in SS4(?). Sorry can't remember the SS# very well. It's been 10 years since.
ReplyDelete10 years ago? That's a looooong time.
DeleteWhatever curry is welcome on my plain rice, dhal, kari ikan, kari ayam and sambal, hehehe~
ReplyDeleteFor me, it depends on my mood.
DeleteTummy grumbling, cannot eat so spicy one. Later, all purged out. ;p
Fried sotong is a must during banana leaf meals. Eat first, then only worry about cholesterol level, hah!
ReplyDeleteSo true!
DeleteOtherwise don't eat banana leaf rice, right? ;)
Not enough with the lunch treat, I forced my hubb to go for banana leaf meal on Sunday brunch, no wonder I was growing horizontally back then.
ReplyDeleteWhoah! Ini amoi sure can eat lah!
DeleteSalute!
10 years ago, my metabolism still good not like now - sudah jammed. Fasting one month I also won't get slim!
DeleteAiyoh... don't talk about 10 years ago lah!
Delete10years ago, no need to exercise also can maintain shape. hu~
No enough with that, I ordered tosai telor and eat again @_@
ReplyDeleteOh boy, I can't afford to have such heavy meals now.
Sudah loading all that cholesterol-high food, might as well indulge is it? kakaka
DeleteNow, jaga badan and take care of health already izit? ;)
I prefer banana leaf rice to nasi briyani :p
ReplyDeleteBut if no banana leaf rice, nasi briyani also sapu!
You know what I like best? Fish head curry! At Kampung Attap. Aiyoh so long never go there.
DeleteDrooling all over my keyboard at the thought of eating fish head curry. ^^
Briyani!!! That's a very popular Cape-Malay dish in South Africa! Awww, man, awww, I want some briyani so bad now!
ReplyDeletePS: All those dishes look utterly yummy. Sushi? Meh. :-p
Come over. I can cook for you.
DeleteMind, I only cook briyani on Eid so if I cook it at other times, it's a special treat. ;p
Banana rice has always been my favorite besides Jap foods but then again, I am scared of the oily part of it juga,,,,,,hahahahah
ReplyDeleteOnce in a while OK right?
DeleteThen we always burn it off by running. ;p
I love love love! I pun have a hankering for banana leaf right now! And i love the one at Nirwana Bangsar!! huhuhuhu seeing this also hungry! never mind lah make do with my curry chicken that I cooked for dinner!! hahahahaah lapaaaaar!

Takleh lah... takde darah India pun kemaruk nak kari seminggu sekali. Ini semua salah Encik Zaini. Dulu belum kawen dengan dia, tak suka pun makan kari. hu~
DeleteSure can. Ambik lah gambar mana pun. Hahaha satu geng kita, geng miskin Nokia. wakaka Pening SK tengok. xD
I love everything!! I love the dried salted chilli, the sotong goreng, the fried bittergourd!! All yums! bukan Encik Zaini sorang pandai 2nd helping.. if I tak control, sampai 3 helping pun boleh. Astaga! And i wonder why I cannot lose more weight! hahahaha

DeleteHow are you dear? Serious ke?
Anyways, take care.
