Onigiri For The Weekend

My son loves onigiri.
Instead of opting for a simple way to enjoy it, i.e. buying an ready-made onigiri at the supermarket, I rather make some for him.

And I decided to make some last weekend.
An affordable choice for Japanese short grain rice is the Sumo brand.

RM9.90 for a kg.

RM29.90 for 5kg.

Compare this to the mid-range price of Nishiki Rice which is sold at RM27.99 for a 2.5kg pack, Sumo rice is a no-brainer as a choice. Actually, the rice is pretty decent.
My cooked rice.

It's a combo of Sumo rice and cooking oats. For texture and fibre. Plus, I feel the oats makes the rice much more moist and don't get dry quickly.
Son not only loves to eat onigiri, he loves helping to shape the triangles too and it's so easy to do with the onigiri mould.

I've got several in different sizes at home.
I made two batches.
On Saturday, it's onigiri with a simple sardine & mayo filling. Wrapped with nori (dried seaweed sheets) or eat it as is. It's essentially just a nasi inti sardin, anyway. Hahaha

Son ate 4 balls of these at one sitting! ^^
For Sunday, we decided to make some and share with some friends who were training at Broga Hill. After all, onigiri makes the perfect travelling food.

These are simple too.

I added some furikake (in this case Tamago and Bonito flakes furikake) to the rice mix and shape them. Didn't want to make anything too funky in case nobody wants to eat them!

I hope those who ate them last Sunday liked them!

Flood Relief For Pantai Timur

As everyone is aware, the flood in certain parts of Malaysia has reached critical level. Apart from the agencies doing the best to aid the flood victims, it is heartening to see Malaysians are all rallying around to aid them.
A group of runners had been tirelessly volunteering at one of the collection point, over the weekend.

and now they are calling for volunteers to load 2 trailers this evening.
Apart from these, the communities are also busy with getting aid.
There are many ways we can help.
By providing basic necessities, or cash, or giving a helping hand, and/or some prayers for the flood victims.
Just sharing a few ways to channel our assistance, which was shared by friends over at Facebook.

We can blame anyone we want to later... but first, let's all rally together to help the victims.
Even a small effort means a lot.
Stay safe everyone.

Broga Vertical Run

There's this Series of run, called in a very tongue-in-cheek way as the #Saltfish Series by a group of people into running crazy long distances; and the first run in the series was the Broga Vertical Run held on Dec 28th, 2014.

It's not an official event but rather a training ground for those wanting to train, and train in running trails with a group of like-minded people.

It's a self-support run, which means everyone participating is responsible for their hydration and other necessities.

The format of this particular SaltFish series is simple, Just do as many loops as one can, from the foot of Broga Hill to the 4th peak from 8:00am to 6:00pm. Fun, right? Hahaha

Anyway, a few in the group decided that it's more fun to add some mileage and head to Mount Tok Wan to make their loops instead.  Hehehe
Both Zaini and I started our hike up to Bukit Broga an hour later. At 9:00am.

At that time, the others had only finished a loop and were heading to do their second loop. And also, at that time of the day, Broga Hill has less visitors than earlier in the morning, with most left already up or making their way down. Less crowded.
The first few hundred meters is a shaded trail. See? Tadak orang.
Until we reached the first viewing point. Then, you get a clear access to the blue sky above. ^^
Saw a "kaki" there so stopped for a while to rest, chat and of course take photo. From here, Zaini decided to continue first while I took my time completing the hike up.
Still more "bukit" to cover. And that one in the photo is not the peak yet.
At 1150 feet, and the second viewing point. At this point, a hiker wearing a CAPAM finisher tee said hello. ^^
Another hill to climb to get to the peak. Get to the batu-batu area, on top of the hill.
1312 feet. The third viewing point of Broga Hill.
And one selfie there. Hehehe

Blusher? Who needs them? I always got my face very red when I go out for a run/walk/hike during late mornings.
Group photos of the runners who came down (or is it up?) to Broga on the last Sunday of 2014.
The feast after the run.

Thank you for the food!

Thank you for the company too!

School Stuff Shopping

We just did a fairly last minute school shopping for our Son.

He needs a whole lot of new stuff as he can't use the uniforms that he wears in Year 6. Already secondary school so now back to wearing white shirt and white shoes to school. Plus the green secondary school pants.

He will have his  orientation next Friday and school will start on Monday, Jan 5th 2015.

Still plenty of stuff to get. Hair to cut too.

Man... school is opening soon!

Weekend BBQ Picnic At Sungai Congkak

While others are out for races; be it the Cyberjaya TwinCity Marathon, Twilight Ultra Trail, Salomon X Trail Run, Taiping Run or whatever and having loads of fun this weekend, we only went out for a BBQ picnic/gathering in Sungai Congkak in Hulu Langat.

Congrats to everyone to finished their run today!
Thank you PACat Adventure Team for inviting us to join their picnic/gathering.

They had booked a chalet at Sungai Congkak Recreational Forest (Hutan Lipur Sungai Congkak) for their family and had generously invited some of us for a Sunday gathering. Sure was nice to meet fellow runners for a chit-chat, especially since both Zaini and I don't have any races lined up this month.
Plenty of stuff to eat and all yummy. I just aimed for the grilled lamb, squids and prawns and completely ignored the chicken drumsticks and wings. Hehehe
Good food. Great company.

I learnt quite a bit listening their stories and experiences on racing and training. Even tested a running watch just to see how it feels. ^^

Gotta buy a new GPS running watch soon to replace my old Timex Ironman GPS watch soon and am still weighing my options.
While the adults were talking and chit-chatting, the kids spent most of their time in the water, having a whale of a time!

They only came out to eat! LOL

Meeting Ultraman, At McDonald's Anyone?

Ultraman Tiga is free to meet his fans and tomorrow is the final day to meet with Tiga at McDonald's Semenyih, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn and Titiwangsa!

One of the branch is actually quite near for those heading to BBWS at Mines. Hehehe

Not really sure why I'm suddenly excited about this. Must be due to lack of stuff to blog about and the fact that I've just drafted a few posts about our trip to Japan last month over at my Japan blog, Urutora No Hi. ^^
Anyways, Hubby and Son just had a McD breakfast on Friday morning and got the Ultraman Tiga stamper. Ceh! Never invite me also! LOL

Postcards To Ourselves

For each city (not each Country), yes.. each city we visited while we are on vacation, we'd send a postcard to ourselves.
It's a cheap but rather meaningful memento to us, for the memories of the places we visited.
Especially so when the postcard is of the local place, with a stamp and local postmark on it. ^^

Oh yeah, while we send a local postcard from each city we've been to, a few of our friends received some special Ultraman postcards that we actually treasure. We got the postcards a few years ago, and we thought that it would be good to share a few with a few of our ultra-running friends. Quite apt, I'd like to think myself. ;-)

Midweek Wish For The Weekend

We are going picnicking this Sunday... with a group of friends, for a gathering of sorts. Can't wait!!!

And of course, I definitely can't wait to enjoy the outdoors and maybe spend a few hours walking/running on both Saturday and Sunday.

There will be a number of races this weekend, like the Twilight 12-hour Ultra, Cyberjaya Twin City Marathon, Muar Strong Man Challenge, Salomon Trail Run and Taiping Run, to name a few.

All the best to fellow runners who will be racing this weekend!

I'm taking a break from joining any races this December. Forced to lah... poket sudah kering after holiday! Muahaha

New Phase

Well, kinda.

So my boy got his NRIC (National Registration Identity Card) done last week.
A big boy now. No, make that a young man now. ^^

Pretty soon, come new year of 2015, he'll face a new phase in his life. He is going to secondary school.

All Mommy and Daddy hope from him is for him to be the best he can be, enjoy what he loves to do and most importantly, be a good human being. Insya Allah. God willing.

Press Release: MPIB Run 2015 Let The Countdown Begin! & With A Good Deed Too

Kuala Lumpur, 16 December 2014 – Multi-Purpose Insurans Bhd (“MPIB”) kept the excitement bubbling for its annual community Run with 30 Days Countdown to Race Day at Pacific Regency Hotel on 12 December 2014. The event was held a week later than originally scheduled following the postponement of MPIB Run 2015 in support of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s “1st Sunday Kuala Lumpur Car Free Morning”.
The registration for MPIB Run 2015 closed 14 days earlier than the official closing date of 30 November 2014. MPIB’s Chief Operating Officer Mr. Liew Yaw Lian said, “MPIB Run 2015 will be the 4th run organised by Multi-Purpose Insurans, but the theme remains the same: “Healthy Lifestyle – Work Life Balance”. We believe that it is as relevant today as 3 years ago as our modern lifestyles have become more sedentary while the line between work and life is disappearing. Therefore, I am gratified that the response to the Run has been enthusiastic.”
At the Cocktail event, MPIB also launched Project Good Deeds, an initiative that collects pre-loved, clean and still wearable shoes and tee shirts for the Orang Asli community. Mr. Liew continued, “Our Project Good Deed Shoes last year was well supported and many runners donated their shoes, which were given to the Orang Asli community. This year, we are doing this project slightly differently, i.e. besides shoes, Project Good Deeds also collects clean and still wearable tee shirts from our participants.”

The project is set to benefit the Orang Asli community in Sungai Mai, Jerantut, Pahang; and Sungai Lalang, Semenyih; Bakok, Dengkil; and Bukit Jenuk, Dengkil, Selangor.

In his speech, Mr. Liew also dwelt on My First Run Clinic, a 2-month programme that precedes every MPIB Run with talks and get-together sessions for both amateur and seasoned runners at Padang Merbuk Car Park. The last My First Run Clinic session for the year will be held on 20 December 2014 and feature a Fellowship Run, a talk on “My First Road Race” by Runners Malaysia co-founder Mr. Wan Yew Leong and a potluck breakfast. The 1st collection for Project Good Deeds will also be made then. Mr. Liew took the opportunity to invite the media to the session, which is open to the public.
Finally, Mr. Liew warmly thanked the Run’s sponsors and partners for their invaluable support. For MPIB Run 2015, the list of sponsors and partners include New Balance, Revive Isotonic, Running Malaysia, and Pacific Regency Hotel Group; as well as Affin Hwang Capital, BP Healthcare Group, Mamee, Magnum, Nestlé Fitnesse, Nestlé Milo, Pilatique, Pinang Medical Supplies, KT Tape, Leong Adjustment Sdn. Bhd., Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur, Safeguards G4S, Simply Juice, Massimo and Penyelarasan Angkasa Sdn Bhd.

There are still weeks to go before the Race takes place at the Padang Merbuk, but the Organiser is building the excitement steadily. MPIB looks forward to organising another fun and memorable race for all its participants, who come from all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels.
