Time To Spay Our Kittens!

Time flies, and the kittens we rescued back in late-March are already 6 months old.

They had all their vaccinations done, their de-worming on schedule and there's one more thing to do. To spay our female kittens. Cats that are six months old or weighing more than 2kg can be neutered.

Anyways, spaying is a general term used to describe the ovariohysterectomy of a female animal. Neutering is a general term used to describe the castration of a male animal. However, neutering is often used in reference to both genders.

There are many benefits to neuter our cats, and some of the reasons are:
  • To prevent unplanned litters
  • It eliminates the constant crying and nervous pacing of a female cat in heat
  • The long-term benefit of spaying and neutering is improved health of our cats.
Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer. Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

We sent our cats to My Own Pet Shop which is located in Balakong to have the procedure done. It's not a clinic but a pet shop that also provide boarding, grooming and mating services. The procedure was done by a vet that is appointed by the shop.

We had sent our kittens for boarding at My Own Pet Shop a few times when we were travelling and we certainly are satisfied with their boarding service.

The fee was reasonable too, at RM120 for female cats and RM80 for male cats and it include a night boarding.

If you're staying somewhere nearby Balakong, Kajang or Seri Kembangan, you may want to check out Kembiri Kucing Murah KL/Selangor Facebook page for more details on neutering.
Our two kittens (Putih & Kelabu) in their separate carriers.

The carriers need to be labeled and the inside lined with potty pad.

The night before their spaying, they had to fast just like humans before a surgery!

The kittens were ready to go home the next day but needed to be kept in a cage to limit their movement for two weeks. Male cats however only needed another two days to be recovered unlike female cats that needed more time.

It is after all, a major surgery for female cats.
The kiddos making sad faces in their cage.

After a week, their scars are certainly healing well and they are already very active now. They seemed to refuse to poop or pee on the potty pad because they couldn't use their usual cat litter.

We took a pity on them and let them use the litter but we made sure that no sand residue get in touch with their scar and wiped them thoroughly with wipes after each potty session (good thing they only pooped once in the morning and later once in the evening).

It'll be two weeks this Saturday and they can finally be let loose and create havoc all around the house again! LOL

  1. Bravo, Lina, for highlighting the benefits. Many still don't realise the importance of spaying cats and dogs.

    1. Some may choose to do it, some may not.
But we need to be responsible of our choices for our pets, right?
