Let The Light Shine Within Us, This Deepavali

Don't judge a book by its cover, we are always been reminded of that. But consciously or unconsciously, we do it. We judge others by how they look, by the colour of their skin, how they dressed, how we perceived them; often without bothering to know each other's background.

Greater harmony can be achieved through greater understanding and compassion in a multi-racial society like ours and there are so many ways to do it.

For me, I have the love of running as a sport to be a part of a caring community with charity drives done by running groups not only for local charitable causes but also for overseas, such as the charity drive for Langtang in Nepal to help the area rebuild itself after he devastating earthquake in 2015.

Fellow runners from all background came to help without hesitating when there is a need to help regardless of race or religion, during the flood in Kelantan or for Orang Asli causes or for Old Folks' home or orphanages.
A similar interest can bring people from all kinds of background together and closer and create an understanding of each other.

For the coming Deepavali, the Petronas new webfilm reminded me of how we sometimes judge people and don't really try to understand or be close to others to know their real story just because of how they look or how they behave.

Do, do watch this clip. It hits a nerve. I am guilty of judging people by first glance.

I believe we Malaysians are a compassionate lot but sometimes our lack of understanding about others who are not similar to us cloud our judgement and makes us suspicious of others and misjudged them.

Why not we let the light shines within us and continue respecting each other as both individuals and as Malaysians.

In light of the Deepavali celebration, we Malaysians should respect each others’ differences and embrace similarities.

HAPPY DEEPAVALI!

  1. I think to certain extent most of us tend to be wary and suspicious when we see strangers perhaps due to their appearance, the way they talk, the way they carry themselves and we either consciously or unconsciously pass judgment. I am all for acceptance and embracing our diversity in the spirit of muhibbah!
