Madam Kwan's For The First Time

First time for our son, that is.

Hmmm....I have to tell you, taking Raimie out for a meal to a place that offer local cuisine isn't something we do often. He eats out at restaurants, yes; but it's either Western, Japanese or Korean mostly. Local food usually meant either eating at a Mamak place or stalls.

We were undecided where to eat last Friday and out of the blue, Raimie wanted to eat at Madam Kwan's and vetoed out my choice of going to Pasta Zanmai. It's been awhile since I last eaten at Madam Kwan's. I think the last time I ate there was with a blogger friend, Anna who was on vacation in Malaysia. Zaini of course, would go to Madam Kwan's for lunch with his colleagues. He's more high-end than I am! (~_^)

Didn't order anything special for dinner, normal stuff like
Black jelly and soya bean drinks
Raimie was undecided  on what to eat so we just ordered fried rice for him
Nasi Bojari for me and Zaini
Zaini and I have two very different personalities, he's the calm, neat one. I'm the impatient and messy one. And our different personality can be seen even on our dinner plate!

Which one would be mine? I think it's pretty obvious.
After dinner, we let Raimie go in to the toy store nearby. Poor boy though. He's been conditioned to only see and touch those toys and not expect us to buy any.  We only allow him to buy toys of his choosing once a year, on our vacation. Where? Head to Urutora No Hi if you didn't know the answer yet! (^o^)

There is of course exception to this rule, that's when we decide to give him a treat but he knows its a privilege and not something for him to demand.

We bought him the Nintendo Wii on the condition that he gets either one 100% paper or be the top scorer for one paper on his year-end exam. Even his Disneyland visit came with a condition. Get less than top three placing in class, no Disneyland visit last year! We don't want him to grow up expecting everything be served on  a platter. He has to earn it and work for it.

Anyway, got his mid-term result on Friday. Zaini went and met up with his class teacher while I waited for the UniFi technician at home. Not much issue at school but his teacher did mention that Raimie can be quite noisy at times. His spoken English ability needs to be improved and as does his Malay Language comprehension (imagine that!). We do know that Science and Maths aren't much a problem for our son so no issue on those two subjects. Of course he is quite strong in Islamic studies too. After all, he always emerge top in class in Sekolah Agama. Sorry if I sound like I'm bragging about my son because I am! ಠ‿ಠ

  8. Why is it that when we don't know what to eat at a restaurant we always end up with fried rice???

  9. Yes! It's good to train Raimie so he doesn't expect everything to be served on a silver platter. That's good parenting : )

  10. Even megarich Bill Gates doesn't leave his entire fortune to his children! They have to earn their own money so I heard.

  14. haha! the difference was indeed obvious. :p it was the opposite for us, but recently it has gotten harder n harder to differentiate ever since he started to adapt to my style. i love the part that you trained him to appreciate. :)

  16. @sriyany,
We are not perfect, but we try to instil what we think good values to our Son. Sure hope we are doing OK with it!

  17. @Foong,
Haha I agree with you! It's just stall food at a posh prices. XD

Zaini always stack up the plates nicely and even wipe the tables after we are finish eating. If only we get rebate for doing it. LOL

Yahor? I guess fried rice is the default menu. If I don't want to think about what to cook also, fried rice would be the simplest. :)

Bill Gates may not leave his fortunes but his kids will have another advantage - connections. True or not?

Raimie knows he can't get everything he wants without doing something in return, but that still didn't stop him from asking for things! But at least he knows that I don't ever tolerate whining or temper tantrums.

  18. @Yatie,
Itulah... actually nak juga tengok dia dpt no. 1 tapi so far untuk sekolah kebangsaan - memang dia tak boleh. Lainlah SRA.
Buat mcm tu pun sebagai motivation jugak kan, utk suruh dia usaha lebih sikit. :)

  19. @levian,
Well, it's good that he's the one adapting. ;p

Have to teach kids nowadays not to take things for granted.

  20. I used to love Madam Kwan's that is until the wife and me discovered Serai in Empire Shopping Gallery :D

And you have every right to brag about your lil boy, I know I would :D It's good that he knows that he has to work hard if he wants something, I do the same with my kids too. Makes them stronger in life later and not become someone who needs to be spoon fed all the time.

  21. @Nick,
Serai nice ah? I read a couple of blogs about it and the food sure looks tempting. :)

We ask him to work for things that he wants but boy, and I guess its lucky that he may have a bright mind because that boy is sure lazy about studying or doing his homework! Always kena scold about it. XD

  22. Haha! Friend rice seems to be the choice when we don't know what to eat. Just like grabbing a hot dog bun from the bakery when we don't know what else to get haha.

I wonder why I never go to this kind of places for local delights. Guess if I want local delights, I would go to kopitiams by the road side. :P

  23. whoops! Friend rice?! how did that happen? hahah! Fried Rice... Fried :p

  27. hehehe, quite surprise you are such a messy person huh?? actually i'm also very tidy, my plate will end up exactly like your hubby's, hahahaha.. guess nowadays guys could be tidier than ladies huh?? :D

    ReplyDelete
  28. @SK,
Yar... always bring him to Pasta Zanmai or Ko Hyang only. I think I only ever took him to Little Penang Cafe once! XD

For individual meal, Nasi Bojari is the best choice lah, right? A lot of stuff to eat on one plate. :)

You also very tidy? :) Well, I'm not that messy but I'm not that neat either. ^^

  30. i've only been to Madam Kwan's at Klcc once and i love nasi bojari.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ECL,
Aiya, no need lah. Much better eat at roadside stall. Cheaper some more. XD

    ReplyDelete
  32. @LR,
Nasi Bojari is quite nice, right? Plenty of things to eat on one plate. ;p

  33. I normally go to the one at KLCC but find it a tad too noisy, even when seated on the outer fringe. I suppose, it shows how busy the place is. On a weekend, you even have to register your reservation and wait for your turn and sometimes could be a pretty long wait! I once ordered their goreng pisang and was pleasantly surprised at how good they tasted. For their price, they better be good, eh? LOL!

  34. Btw, I'm impressed that Zaini even stacks up the plates and wipes the table. I'm sure he's one in a million or more! Tell him I said so..

    ReplyDelete
  35. @HappySurfer,
No, I don't want to tell him! Later he became smug with me. LOL
